Description
The Highway Engineering Laboratory is a teaching and research laboratory equipped to conduct standard tests for asphalt pavement design and paving materials. The lab has the capability to provide undergraduate education in highway engineering, as well as advanced research-oriented experiments on new paving material.
Compressed-air drier, with water-cooled condenser and large air receiver. This device is used to dry freshly mixed asphalt paving mixtures. The laboratory also has a port for an acetylene torch that can be used in conjunction with the compressed-air drier to preheat batches of asphalt mix before drying them.
Dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), which is designed for measuring pavement strength by impacting one or more points on a semi-rigid surface at specified test speeds. The DCP records force versus depth data as it plunges into the pavement material under various loads ranging from 1000 pounds per square foot up to 50,000 psi.
