Engineering geology is the application of geology to engineering study for the purpose of assuring that the geological factors regarding the location, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of engineering works are recognized and accounted for.

The word ‘geologic’ refers to anything related to rock or soil. Geologists have a wide range of skills including knowledge in chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology as well as understanding how natural systems work – from earthquakes to landslides.

Their role is typically one where they advise engineers on how different structures will behave when there’s an earthquake or other similar event. Engineering geologies can also be used by those who make decisions about environmental impacts such as mining companies.

Engineering geologists primarily focus on one of two fields: structural engineering or environmental engineering. Structural engineers will design and help to build structures, such as buildings and bridges that can withstand earthquakes or other natural events. Environmental engineers are more focused on the effects that human activities have on the environment – from mining, oil extraction, and construction projects.

They usually do not work in traditional office settings but out in the field where they often need to wear protective gear like a hard hat when working near hazardous materials.
