Building construction is the process of adding structure to real property. The vast majority of building construction projects are small renovations, such as the addition of a room, or the renovation of a bathroom. Often, the owner of the property acts as laborer, paymaster, and design team for the entire project. These smaller projects often give way to larger ones that involve more complicated designs and labor teams.

In order to construct a building, property owners must first find an appropriate piece of land for the new structure. This is often a task in itself as there are many factors that go into deciding if the site chosen will be suitable for construction; such things as its size and location relative to local population centers, infrastructure, public transportation routes, access via major roads, or highways, etc. Once the decision has been made on where to build it is necessary to design what type of building you want. This can range from any residential residence all the way up to large commercial office buildings.
